I've got a job starting down in the Auvergne next week and I'm just piling mine into the back of the Defender and going. I'll let you know if I have any problems.

Yes please do, would be nice to know they're not going to take away all my babies at the border

Took my chainsaws and kit on the Newcastle-IJmuiden ferry in the back of the trailer about ten days ago. No problem at all, the only thing that caught the eye of the border officer was a long insulation knife in the back of the trailer -friend took it because he did some insulationwork on my new house. Had to hand it in for the time we were on the ferry and could pick it up about 15 minutes before we got of the boat.

This reminds me! I was boarding the ferry to France years ago and was carrying two of the large bottles of LPG, the border officers weren't going to wear that! Fortunately we had two vans with us, so moved one bottle into the other van. All sorted.

I'm guessing the OP won't be carying Gas. Some things, like your knife can catch you out mind.
