A man said American walnut but not sure, not come across it befor

the leaves don't look quiet right for tree of heaven but I haven't seen one for a few years so not sure

Doesn't look like Tree of Heaven, the base of the leaf should have a 'notch' type lobe (can't think of a better way of explaining it); I'd say it's a Walnut of some description as SKS suggests.

I was taught a useful tip to ID walnuts below the leaf petiole attachment point there should be what looks like a monkey face and in photo 3 there does appear to be such a face.

Macca's comment about the chambered pith is also a dead give away.

Another one for Black Walnut (Juglans nigra), too many leaflets for Juglans regia. Watch out for Juglans ailanthifolia, as the name suggests it's apt to be confused with Ailanthus.
