Because the crane (80t) didn't have larger duties at the required reach. I think the larger but are about 4t iirc.

 

Fair enough, but a shame given a tree's age and stature that it's use after it's demise is severely limited due to an inadequate crane being used. The few hundred extra pounds for a larger crane might well have been realised in the timber sale had it been longer lengths.

J, I get what you're saying. But the customer paid for the tree to be taken down not to satisfy the secondary use of the timber. They already have a lot of planks from this tree and the lime that was taken down at the same. If you factor the extra cost for 4 days crane hire (most l likely a 100t) is not economically viable which is a shame. If the task was to provide timber for milling that's different. by the way I got a nice lump to mill, probably to make a laundry chest. I'm sure what's left will be used sensibly and not just left or burned. Cheers Mark

I suppose I would just look at it differently if I were the customer. Something along the lines of: "It's a damned shame we have to take down these spectacular cedar, but seeing as we have to, how can we make best use of the timber without it costing us too much?"

 

I just hate seeing good timber cut short - it happens all the time, but it's still annoying! Those big butts would be ideal for someone with a Lucas mill to produce cladding/boarding with.
