What short memories we all have re the 181, mufflers falling off, throttle shutting down when under cutting, dirt passing the air filter, main bearing failures, chain brake coming on prematurly, terrible twin steel ring piston, the 281 was a far better saw.

When your knee deep in them, and the MOD ones, you see all the faults warts and all, as i said when the 281 came along they ironed out all the problems, then yes it was a good saw, if you have a 181, put the bar under a log and pull up on the handles, watch what happens to the throttle, hence the roll action style throttle on the 281, had a s t weekend so had to moan about somthing.

Ahhhhh! that explains so much. I have a 181 and I adore it, never been a problem with it but it will not undercut when even slightly dull chained. I get it now!

Mine starts no bother. Chain brake on, full choke and lock the trigger on. Never more than 3 pulls needed, even after a 3 month layoff. Used to damn near pull the whole saw over my shoulder trying to start it until I tried locking the trigger.
