In those cases where I think something could split out like storm damage I get some large slings and wrap them tightly around the piece below the cut and connect with a Mallon. In the unlikely event that will snap I tie my lanyard around the piece and connect that back to itself and connect yourself to that with a prussic loop or a break-away sling, this seems the safest way if you "need" to put yourself in that situation.

Weak links on a harness would cause too much hassle and although I believe in natural selection, the HSE don't 😂
