254xp bar

The 13" bar on my 254 is shot and needs replacing i'm mostly using it to cut softwood saw logs in half and am getting frustrated by having to constantly cut from both sides so was wondering what is the longest bar this saw can practically handle?

Also i use it 1-2 times a month is a better quality bar worth the extra cost or are the benefits mostly longer service life?

many thanks

I've got an 18" on mine - maximum length on chainsawbars.co.uk

The real maximum is of course longer, but then the handling/balanse would suffer badly.

A 13" is of course awkward on that saw, as the saw will be rear heavy.

I would have liked to mostly use a 16", but 18" will be fine as well if needed - and a 20" can of course be used in a pinch.

Be aware that the 18" 72dl .325 stuff is only 17", while the 68dl 3/8" stuff is over 18".

With a short .325 bar, an 8-pin drive sprocket likely is a good idea.

While we're on the subject of254's, I have one I have just tweaked a little but has the clutch drum with the large spline and the four quadrants that stick out past the rim sprocket to drive the oil pump. I am finding it very difficult to find a 7 pin rim .325 sprocket to fit. No delivery date from Oregon is available. When I look at a small spline clutch drum the oil pump drive quadrants aren't there. Don't say fit a 3/8 rim sprocket as I several .325 bars!

It simply isn't possible to make a 7 (or 8) pin .325 rim that fits in a large (standard) 7-spline drum - so no wonder there are no delivery date!

Thank you Sawtroll, I knew you'd pop up! More concerned about getting a small spline sprocket that will still drive the oil pump. I don't really understand what the large spline drum is doing on this saw. It goes like banshee so I'd like to tone it down a bit with a 7 tooth rim.

According to the 2001 IPL, part number 503 64 66-04 is a kit that includes the small spline drum and a .325x7, and the correct drive gear for the oil pump.

The 3/8" kit came with a standard (large) spline drum, so it isn't really odd that it is on your saw - just the choise of a previous owner. :001_smile:

PS; take a look at frame Y in the above IPL, if your saw isn't a late one....
