There will be a bolt on the side of the gearbox with a Torx screw in it, take that out and if you use Stihl grease the thread on the grease tube is the same as the thread on the screw making it easy to get the grease in.

i got them secondhand and have only used them a few times. do you put the grease directly onto the blades?

 

You need to remove the stud under the main body and pump it in .

No, if you turn the hedgecutters over, there is a star drive screw on the bottom. If you take that out, the little Stihl tubes of grease screw straight into the hole.

thanks, i didnt get a manual and have never owned or had to maintain any hedge cutters that i have used in the past. have i done them any damage?

I'd take the back of the gearbox and have a look if I were you.

Might be that the little square'ish spacers in the middle of the blades are worn.

 

this means you can tight the blades up to much.

periodically drench the blades with your two stroke/petrol mix and run them, this cleans the sap and green of the inside of the blades leaving the two stroke oil then relube the blades.

 

The sap can cause overheating.

thanks everyone for your suggestions. it turns out i had hit some wire which had created a kink/burr in one of the blades whch was trapping the cutters. i put some of the stihl grease in them also. how much should i squeaze into them?
