Lynx in Thetford forest

The minimum legal calibre of high velocity rifle which may be used for deer stalking in England is .240 inches (Deer Act 1963). The exception being Chinese water deer and muntjac which is .220

A shotgun may be used as a method of euthanising injured deer.

Thought it was around that calibre . I stand corrected . :001_smile:

13.31 The Deer Act also authorises the use

of smooth-bore guns of at least 12 bore for

shooting deer, firing a non spherical slug of

at least 350 grains to kill deer on cultivated

land, pasture or enclosed woodland if it can

be shown that the deer were causing serious

damage to crops, vegetables, fruit, growing

timber or other property, that such damage

was likely to continue and that that action

was needed to prevent this. This provision

was intended to allow farmers and crofters

who own a shot gun but not a rifle to deal

with marauding deer.

You are indeed correct. I missed that. Don't know where the 13.31 comes from but below is a link to the copy I read.

Apparently the IUCN guidelines state that the Lynx shouldn't have human contact before being reintroduced. It's likely they will be taken from the wild in other parts of Europe and relocated to the UK with as little human interaction as possible. (I'm having this narrated to me as I type haha)

The human contact thing is also called imprinting. Read about the reintroductions of Great Bustard on Salisbury Plain to see some of the lessons learnt and what fun they all had!

yea sorry to be a bit pedantic :blushing:

the whole thing is a moot point really considering you need to be FAC to own solid slug ammunition.

Back to the OP, in theory great, in reality..........not so

That includes the Brenneke slug I presume ?

- Will only have a minuscule effect on livestock population (assuming correct conservation practices are undertaken for prey levels in the hunting area of the Lynx eg reduced Roe stalking)

Interesting point, introduce Lynx to control deer numbers and then reduce stalking to increase deer numbers for the Lynx...

I would be curious to hear from someone who stalks Thetford forest, would they view the roe numbers as out of control or too few? I often hear conflicting reports about the deer numbers where I live.

I'm a little sceptical of 'facts' posted from the charity that wants to introduce them, slightly one sided. Assuming they are correct it does not tell me what deer Lynx will attack, i.e. young, old, or a range. That would be useful to know.

I look forward to the time wolverines are introduced to control the lynx.
