I bought a TD5 engine with 8k on it, with all the fitting with the intention of converting from 300tdi.

 

Gave up at the first hurdle.

 

You would have to change bulkhead, wiring harness, clocks etc, transfer box and even fuel tank.

 

It's a massive job to do right.

 

The immobiliser is even wired to the fuel sender in the tank.

Only problem I have with my defender 130 is pulling away at junctions which are slight uphill, when fully loaded and the chipper. I have to knock it into low box to get moving then snatch back into high box.

 

I have just put a new 300tdi engine in with a brand new injector pump and it is still no different.

 

Is this a common thing with 300tdi,s ?

 

Its not a fault, A land rover is designed to tow well. however the land rover engineers never envisaged it to only tow well in High box, The secret is to learn how to shift from High to low and low to high on the move. With practice you will get a smooth change at about 15mph. I will often pull away in lowbox with a trailer on and then change up.

 

Using low box to pull away loaded and for reversing trailers will save lots of wear on the transmission and extend the life of your clutch,

you did the right think, if you are not totally happy with a 300 pulling away, you would hate a TD5.

Red diesel is not a straightforward issue....first you must make sure you register it as an Agri mac ( free tax !) then your on limited road miles...blah blah blah....if you worry about legislation in this country you'll never get any work done ! it saves me £4000 a year in fuel ! I do lots of agri work so it suits me....depends on your circumstances but I never met anyone who's regretted buying one ! Best thing Mercedes ever made !

You've not met mr ed then?

I love mine and would not want to be without it,but if someone buys one and thinks there going to save loads of money there in for a shock imo.

Thats true,if your not mechanically inclined then think seriously about getting a Mog.I've had mine one month and had to do a fair few things to it.Thankfully nothing major but as they differ in so many ways to a normal truck that I think its best to have a specific need for one,ie tight acess or cross country travel.

 

We have done a couple of jobs that would have been impossible with a nomal 4x4 tip truck,unless you had taken a dozer in there and done some bladework to the ruts and rocks we had to get over/around.

 

I'd love to uprate the HP on my U1000,but after last weeks "Bog a Mog" fiasco,I'm putting the money towards a winch!:)
