The heads are prone to cracking on them.

Just buy a complete head with valves etc already installed and then its only a few hours to put a complete head on.

If your paying labour for them to swap the valves/springs/collects over to a new bare head it wont work out much different financially to just buy the complete head and have all new.

And whilst its off anyway make sure a new cambelt goes on and the waterpumps sound.

My first 300 disco had the cambelt changed at the right time then the head went between 3+4. The next 4 discos we run them till the cambelts snapped normally well over 100 k. We then stripped the head off checked for piston damage relaxed a few valve train parts ( can't remember if they had push rods ) Most were sold at 4 years with 260k on the clock and most of it towing. The engines are very good which can easily be checked for wear once the head is off measure the bore and check for a lip near the top of the cylinder. You could do a compression test on the good cylinders before you strip it. The water pumps and p gasket behind them were crap so we often just changed them at 60k saves cooking a good block. We could spot an early pump failure the belt starts making lots of noise and if you look the water pump pulley is out of line with the rest. Over all a good engine but likely to crack the head especially if you tweek the fuel pump and the radiator is not 100%

Did it cook up on either times and how long between head gaskets has it been ? 300tdi's have a habit if cooked hard to warp the face of the block which at best means you need it decked or trued on same machine as the head, if it just gone not cooked get a head from turners and get it fitted if yours has been skimmed to the limits they supply good stuff fast !
