Dean, before you put a new chain on check the wear on the cassette and chainrings as worn `hooked` teeth wil bugger a new chain very quickly, think of it like putting new chipper knives in without setting the anvil. You can do it but not ideal, and it will work but just not as good as it could.

Take some close upish photos of the teeth if you are not sure.

Good points Jonny. The teeth on the rear cassette should be round and fit the chain snugly- if they are elongated cups the cassette is worn. You can measure chain wear- 12" link centre to link centre. If its longer than that it needs replacing.:001_smile:

Bottom brackets are sealed units so therefore disposable and if you change the chain nine times out of ten you'll have to change the cassette aswell. You probably have a hyperglide chain on at the mo Dean which if split will need a new pin. Take it to a shop and let them give it the once over. You wont be able to do it yourself because Shimano are always changing tool patterns and besides if you bugger the bottom bracket threads in the frame you may aswell throw it.

Obviously I can see you know you're stuff. But why mess around with a graunchy bb when you could have new one fitted for about £30.... Like yer style though :001_smile:

Our lass rifled my wallet and found the debit card receipts, so I'm in the doghouse just at the moment otherwise it would have been new BB's without question :001_smile:

Bottom brackets are sealed units .

I am not sure if that is strictly true Mick, some of the more expensive ones i think are not- although i could be mistaken:001_unsure: I think that there is a difference between road and mountain bikes too.:001_smile:
