Has anyone grown mushrooms in logs outdoors, from plugs.

I ve got a pack of shiitake dowels. Just got to find some suitable sized oak that needs thining.

I thought shiitake grew on straw...?

Shii is the name of the tree the take (mushroom) grows on. It's related to our oak I beleive.

Anyway, yes I've grown Shiitake on oak and they've been successful. They did take a couple of years to fruit but that's probably down to the fact it was my first attempt.

First crop:

Logs cut, just need to leave them a while before I place the plugs.

Any advise on where to place the logs once planted.

Thanks

Rob

The ones grown on straw are called straw mushrooms.

Hope that helps.:001_tongue:
