squeeling from ms201 top handle

Recently bought a stihl ms201 to handle via ebay, second hand, few weeks after it arrived and was used it would let out a high pitched squeel or squeek, more so when cold, revving would stop it, if left un revved it would turn itself off and be very hard to restart

 

does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Probably the clutch needle bearing - get some oil on it and see how it goes.

 

It may also be the crank bearings but a lot less likely!

Is the chain running on tick over and does the saw stall when you put the brake on ?

ill try oiling the needle bearing, see if it helps

 

saw doesnt stall when brake on, ill give the whole thing a good clean over the weekend, may just be lack of maintenance! ha

I have the same noise on one of my 346s, changed the needle bearing it still happens but not so often

As I said, I think this will be a little bit of play between the needle bearing, crank and drum. I always grase on service - just did a Dolmar that had the same and it dissapeared but that was a real old machine!

greased the needle bearing and all ok now!

Just dunk it in the pot and put back on?

Silly question: where's the needle bearing?

between the clutch drum and the crankshaft - you need to remove the clutch and clutch drum to get to it!
