Employing the odd labourer

I'm just starting up a new business venture with my son in March. He has his C30 & 31 and looking forward to his climbing course in the near future.

My question is how do you guys go about taking on the odd labourer. I'm about to arrange the Liability insurance and the costs go up as soon as I add employers liability to the policy.

 

The business is mainly going to be Garden & Fencing with some tree work until my son has gained more experience and certificates.

 

I am going to be working with him but I can't be there every day. I'm probably only talking two to four days a month.

 

Problem with starting up, you don't really now what is in front of you.

Think you'l find you need employers liability to employ your son?

You certainly will if you are employing a laborer, even if they are self employed, as soon as you instruct them to do anything, in return for pay you become an employer.

Only way around it (I think) would be if you show them a job- eg strimming 100metre foot path and they give you a written quote for the work (£50 for example) and they then get on with it and invoice you after completion.

Pay should read reward, it doesn't have to be financial, if they get any benefit you are still the employer
