Tautline Hitch

I learned to climb using a Tautline hitch, I went on to use a split tail system with a prussik loop, then onto a Blakes, followed by VT, Distil, Swabisch, Sportsjack etc.

 

These days I'm back to using the Blakes, but whenever I need more stability in the tree on a long branch walk etc using two TIPs wide apart, I'll pull up the end of my line and tie the tautline using a Blakes (see pic).

 

I think all apprentice climbers should know how to tie the closed loop system using just the rope before they learn to use a prussik loop.

 

Any opinions?

Good point, especially if you damage your prussik loop, Blakes split tail or double eye friction hitch cord.

 

Mb is this a superfast tautline with just the one turn down at the top or have you knot tied it properly?

 

Also my Blakes set up without the slack tender micro pulley.

its the first thing i was taught on my cs38, i now use a split tail and blakes

My circle is very similar to yours Tim. Started with a Tautline tied in the end of the rope, then 2 wrap prussik with cord, then Blakes, then VT/ machard tress, now back to blakes.

The Blakes is great for a double tie in using the end of your line...otherwise I'm on this...

Do they not teach it on CS38 anymore then? .

 

Got to demo it on ass, but dont have to climb on it as far as I can recall. Agree that if u cant tie in off single roap u could end up in the brown stuff and good for secondaries.

Was taught to climb that way 20 odd yrs ago so still second nature (although I use bowline).
