To just install post and rail looking at £4.5m inc nails.

Would agree with that, if I can get to around £5/m for the labour aspect then you can generally earn a decent days pay with the post knocker. Assuming 5x3 posts and 3 rails.

Im thinking Labour price for 4 rails would be £5 per metre, that sounds about right Labour wise with chapper for posts, think I'll charge more for hanging gate though, maybe 50 quid plus the gate jewellery.

The posts are going to be 3-4 inch rounds supplied by Coventry fencing, the last post and rAil I did the posts were real good bits of timber,

Chances are they will not be class 4 as Coventry don't supply it. Most Spruce/Fir will only last 5 - 10 years if you are lucky. Any idea what price you are paying for posts and rails ?

If I charged tbat it would be a happy New year I usually take 20 quid to hang a gate, with the hooks on top of that

That's got to be a typo??? £20 to hang a 12 ft field gate??? You must be very busy:thumbup:

£20 is ok if the posts are already in- just fit the hangings and swing the gate- but I wouldn't want to do posts too for £20- madness!

I don't know about everone else and perhaps its just cos I work in such rough country but I can never do driven round posts and rail accurately enough to not have to cut the rails to fit which means exposing untreating wood and having to retreat- dug in posts I don't have to cut rails to fit- still takes longer though.

Big J- I have a list which shows untreated durability of different woods- they give larch 15 years- which is pretty good!

Any chance of you posting that list up here? Sounds like some useful information

If I take more than 20 quid to hang a gate, the farmers will tell me two bits of wire are cheaper!

Does that include posts?

It would cost me £20 just to drive out of the yard!
