It was about being booked up if I had 8 weeks solid work I was having to turn other companies down that made me afraid that I would single myself out to 1 or 2 companies and if work went slack for them I'd have no work. I know the logical thing to do would of been only take on a few days and leave a few open but when it comes to money we need it to pay bills and treat the kids so I had to book my self up.

I'm far better off financially now than I was a freelance climber,

Just for the record I was charging proper climber rates

Thats when you put your prices higher and weed out some of the companies!! I don't like to be booked up any more than 3 weeks ahead!

Nothing wrong with singling yourself out to 1 or 2 companies if they are good companies and you maintain your standards at all times.

Sometimes you just have to take some risks to get on!

what is your rate if you dont mind me asking steve.

i myself were thinking along the lines a of £150 a day

That's the minimum you should be charging.thats what I pay when I get a subbie in.am based in the Midlands.

Just for the record, if you you were working full time as a subbie (who are on higher rates than employees) how can you be better off employed???:confused1:

Thats a big discrepency in rates, why such a difference? I have 1 rate for everyone

I priced for travel and I know most companies around here so I know what they want out of you a day so I priced accordingly

seems a fair price for a good climber.

if you do go self employed, get kit!!

bit by bit. you will need it, can get a better day rate and when doing firewood, you have saws etc.
