What is the ideal size for charcoal?

Made some charcoal from our branch loggings this year and it was nice stuff but sales were slow. Want to put a bit more effort into it this year and I am presently cutting wood and not sure what size makes the best charcoal. Bare in mind the max diameter the branch logger can do is 75mm and I have no say in the lengths it cuts them to but this is around 100mm

 

Pictures of what I made this year. I did not trim off the tips of the branches so there is quite a bit of charcoal as seen on the right of the picture. Is it worth me trimming the tips before branch logging or do you think it is saleable? It all gets put over a 25mm seive but few of the little sticks fall through.

i would reckon that if its easy to light you should be flog it easy

I would not use the tips and would bag it in as large chunks as you can. What type of kiln did you use?

Thats my current thinking.

 

Giving the brash a quick trim before branch logging it. Probably taking the tips back to around 20mm diameter. Just using a homemade retort.

Bioregional spec was that 50% of the chunks should be greater than 50mm.

 

Our log customers used to complain if there was too much roundwood in the mix and it may be the same for lumpwood charcoal.
