To be fair, the standards are normally written with input from all the leading bodies and figures in the particular industry, then published as a draft for wider comment, before being officially 'adopted'.

Then, after all the voluntary, unpaid input from all theses interested parties, we all have the opportunity to spend a fortune obtaining them, to do the right thing.

On most sites we attend, you can just say "of course we do", because the project managers never even seen a copy, and is unlikely to be able to gain access to one anyway.:sneaky2:

So a quango then?????

Thats the approach I've gone for. I told him the nptc guidelines will have been written with that legislation in mind (it seems in reality perhaps not so!) but he made out he had a copy so if ive asked him to send it me so i can be sure!

They are 2 entirely different things, and don't bear that kind of comparison.

One is a recommendation drawn up by a quango, the other is a driving licence for a chainsaw (insert relevant equipment here)

What about my cs 40? Or is it 41 i forget? Did the tree DVLA exchange knowledge with the quango to crossover on pruning or are they different beasts altogether? Got to say i was very unimpressed with the nptc pruning. Didn't feel it taught me much. For the purposes of this though il be working off the recommendations of a tree survey and its dosmantling/felling and planting (might need to sub in someone with more experience on re planting) but lets say if it is pruning stuff too do you think it would be fair to say id be working to british standard off the back of cs40 doing regilar thinning/reductions or nay?

The clue is in the name. The P in NPTC is Proficiency

The B.S. is about setting a standard to work to, the proficiency as about not killing yourself while doing it

The B.S. has its parentage in the industry, the Proficiency has its parentage in the HSE

my issue is you didn't know what BS3998 was in the first place !!!!

Maybe this is a problem in the industry. Anyone can spend their cash, get the tickets and be an arborist. Some never progress to understand why they target prune, to understand the results of their actions on trees and are happy enough at a certain craft level.

Alex Shigo discussed this thirty years ago, that people will do the job not necessarily understanding why they are doing what they are doing, but because that is what they have been told.

This is no comment on the opening poster. Personally, I'd like to see the Brit Standards much more freely available, at more reasonable costs.

Sorry I missed this. There was a copy online, uploaded by a local authority if I remember correctly. I'll have search.
