What are the pros and cons of owning & operating a tracked chipper? its hard to justify the money, but when i think about it there has been loads of times when we could have really used 1 and it makes justification a lot easier...help

Pros:

Go anywhere chipper

Less dragging

Lots of jobs where we can chip on site so means taking less away

Can use chipper to pull trees over/vehicles out

Easy to reverse on trailer

Cons:

Heavy to tow around

Need trailer to tow around

Cost more to buy than road tow

Can be a pain in the arse to chip when it is on the trailer

We have both a 150dhb and bought a 150vtr 2 years ago wouldn't be without a tracked chipper now, probably use the tracked chipper 80% of the time, it makes the job alot quicker and easier by reducing drags etc, also really handy for pulling trees over. cant think of a single negative of having one only its another machine to maintain.

Is that an indespension trailer? Looks similar to ours I just think the chipper sits a bit high on it to chip. We've got two road tows as well so can take the tracked when needed. Overall I think they are quality, only when you get one you think how did you manage without one.

Would also say you get work that you wouldn't normally of got as you can now track the machine to the job and not have to drag stuff miles!

drive the chipper on to a plank ,under the front end of the chipper .that way it lowers the hopper :001_smile:

Ifor gx84 mate. I don't find it too high, the tail gate can be a pain but most of the time it's fine or we just take the chipper off. When I get my new chipper I will get a new trailer that I will get made, small wheels and low bed.

That is my concern the weight! van will legally tow it but when its full of chip and or log! hmm, just looked through some previous jobs we have done and a few of them we could have left chip behind so not such an issue. Don't think there is a really good all rounder out there its a case of what machine best suits our needs... I can get my hands on a new timberwolf 190tftr at 30 grand tomorrow, do i wanna lay that out in 1 go??? Green plant are doing 0% finance on new machines but i reckon the lead time will be a few months away, when really we need the machine now.
