I have a cheap fibreglass handled maul, bought it for £10 and used it for a couple of seasons then the cutting edge snapped a chunk off so I cut the end straight and sharpened it with the angle grinder and it is now at least 5 times better than it was. It doesn't stick like it used to and it cuts loads better than it did.

Just seen this thread. I went head to head so speak against a tractor mounted splitter, vs me with an axe & a maul. After 2 hours I was just ahead, sweaty & bollocksed, he on the other hand was stood in the shade supping tea while splitting.....

 

This was a few years ago when I was a bit of a gym monkey, my fitness & strength weren't in question, however my intelligence for taking the challenge was a different matter.
