Meripilus at 1.4m

My first post so hope it's in the right place.

I have a fern-leaved beech with three fungal fruit bodies on north, north-east and south sides, all at about 1.4m. There is no sign of brackets at or near ground level nor out on the roots away from the tree. Picus readings show tree is decayed in the centre. Is this really Meripilus or have I got it wrong? Grateful for advice.

It's higher up than I've ever seen Meripilus. It might instead be the outward sign of a hearwood rotter, consistent with your tomograph result. Laetiporpus sulphureus comes to mind, as by this time of the year the fruiting bodies are looking a little ravaged. Not unheard of on Beech, I've seen one or two examples up here.

As pointed out in the UKTC thread, here's Alliarias thread regarding the same tree/fungi from August

Thought i recognised this tree. It was down for a reduction on Bristol Council's tree works orders when I was working for the council Contractor. What is your relationship with this tree Jerry? (Just out of interest):001_smile:

Relationship with the tree? Still on friendly terms. Thanks for illuminating comments, Tony, David and Sean. I just read your August exchange about the tree. Would welcome a discussion, Sean, but it might be more professional not to do it on the forum as I haven't sent in my report yet. Could you contact me on [email protected]?
