Chinese Oak Tree removal

Hello

 

I have a 100 year old Chinese Oak tree in my garden which is now getting on for around 50-60 feet tall which is causing problems with leaves blocking guttering of mine and neighbours house.

 

Is the wood from this tree of any use other than firewood?

 

I would appreciate your advice before I do anything, but either way it's got to go

I assume you mean a chinese cork oak? Can you post a picture as I've never actually seen one?

Chuck a hedgehog gutter guard in yours and your neighbours gutters and keep the tree as apart from firewood, it has many uses such as providing oxygen, moderating temperature, wildlife habitat and other stuff like that.

You could try fitting gutter-protection mesh, probably also cheaper than removing the tree.

Does the tree cause other problems which means removal is the only option?

a tree should never be removed just because it's blocking gutters, there are ways to prevent that and chopping the tree down should not be the answer.

 

if it really does have to go then the wood should be milled as oak from that part of the world is good quality stuff but it depends how it's grown in an english climate.

It's called a bamboo leaf Chinese evergreen oak, they have already meshed the gutters but the leaves that drop are flat with a small stem that acts like a hook and they end up latching into the mesh and block it.

The tree is only around 4m from the house and the tree is almost touching the neighbours extension as it's grown around 20 foot in the last few years, its full height is 66 foot which means it still got some growing.

I live in Pontyclun which is close to Cardiff .

We really are not happy about having to remove it but can't see any way around it has the tree is never without leaves and drops them constantly 365 days a year

Hi Wayne,

A picture of the tree in situ would speak a million words. I've not heard of this species before and it looks quite interesting. With a piccy I'm sure someone here can work out a sensible alternative to having it down.

Now I'm really confused. You seem to have a large Eucalyptus Gunnii there, which is a pretty unsuitable tree to grow near to a house, gutters or not. Where did the idea of an oak tree come from? or am I missing something?
