Perhaps someone could shed some light on this, I tighten up the chain fine- go to use it and after a bit it goes slack- but sometimes it seems to tighten itself back up when I rev it or put it back in the cut:confused1:

 

Any ideas, cheers:thumbup1:

I would make sure your oiler is slinging out enough oil as chains usually do this when they get dry and hot or when lack of oil has stretched the chain unevenly.

 

Check your clutch sprocket bearing and the bar end nose sprocket for play and thats about it!

 

Slight edit - check your sprocket/rim for wear as well

Chain does seem dry no matter how much oil is turned up- there is always a puddle of oil on the workbench from it too - not sure why it does that. This seems the most likely explanationas I have checked for wear everywhere else and its minimal.

Do you hold the nose of the bar up when you tension the chain and tighten the nuts?

 

Yes, at first I thought I wadn't doing the side case nuts up tight enough allowing bar to move slightly (as much as the chain tensioner allows) which would cause different chain tensions but it still does it with the nuts done up tightly.

Could also be the oil tank breather, gloop in the bottom of the oil tank, a plugged oil pump or blocked pickup strainer - check the easy ones before tackling the more difficult ones!

I used a 395 for milling and the chain tensioner bolt sometimes sheared. Sometimes difficult to spot but would explain the slacking

 

Aye, what he said. Kickbacks are bad for the tensioning bolts and pins. Broke quite a few on my stihls but that's probably because I'm impatient and always take my rakers too far down.
