Extending base plate on splitter

Should I use flat plate - easy slide logs or chequerplate to stop them sliding when splitting?

 

Any advice welcome

Added checkerplate to ours. Rings still easy enough to slide over the top but hold still when under pressure.

Also it was the only piece of steel sheet I had lying around

You could jump both ways by having a smooth plate which is easy sliding for the big rings and have a piece of chequer plate secured with a couple of bolts with wing nuts for the more manageable sizes.

I was considering that too.....better than chequerplate?
