Thoughts on urban street trees?

The big trees surrounded by tarmac usually grew up in better conditions and have adapted to them. I reckon they get their moisture and nutrients from root growth in nearby gardens.

Pressure local authorities, through TO's, to sort the new street tree environment in the planning stage,i.e forget strip verges adjacent roads as they are also a pain/expense to mow. Aggregate these verges into decent open space areas where large, long lived trees can be planted.

Sorbus, Malus in streets can be a problem at fruit fall.

Limes and Planes in more open areas with Ginko, birch, pear

and field maple in smaller areas.

Not Rowan or Japanese Cherry (look knarly) as they are so short lives and fall over the at the first sign of disease.

Good pollard management can make a big difference giving befits of large stem and mature looking tree with small crown. But how many L.A acutely keep them in good cycle is a different question all together.
