Partly depends on gauge of bar, as can be seen below. Have a look over at 'chainsawbars'.

 

10" bar: 39 DLs, 3/8", .043"

 

 

12" bar: 44 DLs, 3/8", .043" Stihl PMM3.

Oregon same as above but shorter cutters.

Oregon Multicut, 3/8", .050",

 

 

14 bar: 50DLs, 3/8", .050"

Oregon Multicut. Though how the 170 is going to run a 14" is a wonder.

Thanks, it's on a 14" bar. It looks like I'll just have to tell him to keep a couple of chains ready sharpened. ;) It does leave a nice fine finish but that's not really important on firewood although it might be desirable on fencing work.

I use Stihl picco micro on a couple of wee saws and found it to be fine, perhaps it`s what he`s cutting, maybe the woods dirty ? cheers.

 

It's most likely the wood he's cutting as he finds it all over the place and chucks it in the back of the van. He'll learn to sharpen them quicker anyway :D
