Opinions on these trailers?

All interesting points. I had figured the sail effect would be significant, but I wouldn't have it mounted on all the time.

Very interested to know how easy the turntable trailers are to reverse. I have to do some pretty tight reversing on a regular basis, so it would be a worry.

With my turntable I can reverse it around a corner less than 90 degrees, as the dolly part can turn past right angles, with a fixed drawbar a bit more tan 90 degrees is the absolute minimum as you're jackknifing.

To illustrate:

Seen that video before, but never really appreciated that the role the trailer in it. Hmmmm, food for thought.

Just occurred to me that I wouldn't be able to have a bogie trailer as it would get stuck off road, grounding out in the middle over anything other than a very mild hump.

Why would that happen?

I reckon mine is better off road than a rigid three axle would be.

It also has the advantage of being able to jackknife the dolly if the trailer gets stuck, then when pulling again the car can build a little momentum before the trailer gets going again.

It's the distance between the two axles that concerns me - on a 5m bed, there would be about 4m between the axles. If you were going over a large bump, would that not ground out? I ask only because there is a specific flood prevention dyke I can get over in the Navara (short wheel base) and can't in the LDV Maxus (long wheel base).

There's a picture of mine here http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/large-equipment/66872-3-5t-turntable-trailer-2.html behind a defender 90, it's a 5m bed for scale.

I doubt it would bottom out but then I've not seen your road.

If your going to Germany anyway, have a look at what the German farmers use..

That does look seriously tempting. A 5m trailer, with complete curtain side top and spare wheel is £5250 including VAT. 2.5t load capacity and no weight on the tow hitch is very tempting. I'll speak to my German uncle about it and see what he says.

I would seriously evaluate the bogie design for your requirements Big J, after all doubt the new skill needed is going to hold you back.

Design is so much more manuvreable and less stress on towing vehicle. I remember readind an article in a classic tractor magazine about someone who this was the only tralier that ticked all boxes with nose weight axle weights for going to tractor rallies with.
