Oak decline.

Looked at this lovely Oak today, planted in 1897 and showing major die back and weeping from cracks low down on the tree which the wasps seem to be getting a kick out of, the tree is a focal point of the village and it would be a terrible shame to lose it.

 

Any ideas my expert friends?

Could be honey fungus. Any loose back where you can check for mycelium?

Is there much in the way of epicormic growth in the inner crown Carl?

 

Are there any particular compaction concerns?

No, not really much epicormic growth which would suggest stress?

 

The tree is actually privately owned the owner mows the grass himself and he is not aware of any compaction issues, there is a large semi submerged root but that shows no real sign of damage.

 

Aeration and mulching is something I was thinking of proposing, they are, as you can imagine, very fond of the tree and I think they would be willing to take steps to potentially, save the tree.

There are lots of grants for tree works, we use one for some of our vet work program

Could be the early symptoms of Acute Oak Decline. Any lesions further up the stem Carl? I'm monitoring a couple on our patch - forest research can't identify the causal agent yet. Posting on my phone at the moment but i'll put some links and stuff up later.

could it be drought damage..water exudates from the bark?

Have a good look around the tree and check there are no D shaped exit holes of Agrilus pannonicus the beetle grub takes two years to eat its way around oak trees eating which girdles the tree and most die. I was at a RFS/AA talk and this pest is killing a lot of oaks and spreading fast. One man has lost every oak tree in his wood.
