And of course it's not like that here-ah.

So you can't build your home on your own land?

 :D  :D

What do you think?

What are the statistics- 48 million people on land the size of Iowa?? something along those lines...... there's a bit too much pressure...

Sadly....

Butch, its totally forbidden to build on whats called greenbelt land here.

If you imagine that there are 56 million people in the UK, and about 50 million of those in England itself (exclude Wales and Scotland), then forbid those 50 million people from building anywhere outside urban zoned areas, it gives you an idea of the pressure.

and what a joke it is! the uk is still made up of 80% countryside, the population of the uk estimated at between 59-62 million could all fit on something like 4 acres, we have 60 million acres on land and 60 million people, with the average house hold containing 3 people, every household in the UK could own 3 acres of land, obviously I understand the more spread out we are the more infastructure we would need, but i'm damn sure we don't need to be all cooked like we are,off the topic I don't understand why on earth this country grows arable crops, no wonder farmers need subsidys, less unproductive farming and bigger homes or homes out side of pilchard tin development zones I say!

Too many big landowners out there imo, here is an intersting article http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4158/is_20070409/ai_n18998022

Most of us can only dream of that sort of thing now. Only the very rich can afford it.

The land in BigA's link was arable, no planning permission for anything else, and worked out at £5,000 / acre.

This bit of land does have permission to convert the barn. This comes in at £250,000 / acre.
