Large pine tree crane removal/felling

Removed this large pine as it was next to a busy road in a field which a number of other trees had fallen in the storms

Interesting having the rigger riding the hook, saves the climber going up and down I suppose.

Yeh depends on the tree, on this tree it was easier & quicker for someone on the hook to set the strops/chains

Not many crane drivers like that so you got lucky. Must be nice too have the ££ on a job to get crane in, was it just a time thing or was the tree unsuitable to be rigged down?

Yeh we use two crane drivers there both good and safe with us. We could have rigged it down but with the extra time it would have taken, it would have worked out cheaper and easier with the crane.

Could you not have straight felled into the field? Put a winch on it for a back up?

Nah, there was to much weight on the side limb would have snapped of the hinge and gone sideways for sure

So why not setup a guy line? Save $$ on the crane, make more $$$!

Would be interested in seeing the risk assessment for man and load on crane hook at same time.

We had a pull line on the main stem at the end but the whole tree had a bit of a back lean on over a road and a house the other side. The side limb we craned off was growing through smaller trees below, so that was the main reason for the crane to lift the branches out and over the top.
