I have a 300tdi defender, it is indestructable- it pulls my 3ton digger regularly and is in general treated like a tractor. Simple trick is good, regular maintenance, as far as I'm concerned its almost become trendy to dislike land rovers and take a cheap shot at them- they haven't been going 60years for no reason, they are built for a job.

If mine went bang tomorrow I'd still be saying the same thing- 6years of heavy towing and off roading since iv had it, at 16 years old, it has barely cost me more than regular servicing in all that time.

280k is good going for any 2.5liter engine, I'm sure it comes down to maintenance like anything else. Farmers like land rovers because they are basically built for farm work, I know a few farmers who have land rovers for farm use and a posh jap pickup for road use- horses for courses.

I have a Landrover Td5, its a great work horse, pulls my tracked chipper everyday, pull a full ifor 10x5 regularly, goes over fields, through woods and rough terrain and does it very,Very well. However there is a price to pay for this, mine has done 80k now, this year its cost 2k in repairs. I take it to a LR dealer so I do pay a bit more but I'm back on the road in a day, while it's there I get a defender or a disco commercial so I can still tow. I use Land Rover parts where I can again not cheap but designed for the job. Most of my repairs are thing that wear with heavy use such as suspension bushes, steering bushes and drive train oil seals. I thought about getting rid of my Landy recently and after looking at my options she is still the best for me. So you people can dislike Landys till the cows come home but in my eyes there the dogs doodahhs!!

You should also remember that British 300tdi engines were no longer fitted from 1998 making the engine at least 15 years old. How many jap trucks are still on the road after 15 years, the last 5 of which have probably not had as much care in the way of servicing as previous. When looked after and serviced land rovers are not really any more unreliable than other marks Japanese or otherwise. in over 10 years of ownership of land rovers I've blown a half shaft and a transfer box. The only other problems are parts that wore out through heavy work which were replaced.

I had a transit that cost a fortune to repair and an ldv that i spent over a grand on in less than 6 months. the land rover on the whole costs less to repair.
