they kit comes with one watched videos of similar product seems fairly effective im no stranger to brazing so gonna give it a bash, anyone interested here's technowelds version

 

Thanks for the youtube link. always good to sharpen the skills. And as Eldon pointed out , a stainless steel brush is the only way to go.

I experimented with this once and the results were the paint burning and then the metal burning and no decent weld however I have joined aluminium pieces using a kit I purchased.

 

I don't reckon it will work, the large casting will wick the heat away fast and too much heat will melt the casting.

well finally got round to it and spud.... yer right! here's some pics but after all the carry on it was absolute pants all i ended up with was a brittle pile of chicken poo!! and at one point a bit fell of and ignited that was a scary moment!

in a bid to repair it im just gonna glue and pop rivet a plate over the offending area and see how that goes might do for a bit don't know as i can be bothered to go to the trouble of a new casing!

Sorry to be right again but it is pretty much what we did with Mattys, the patch and rivits lasted a few months but we then used a spare set of Jonsered crankcases, I had kicking around, to do the repair - got there in the end:thumbup:

 

Reckon that the alloy must have Magnesium in it if it ignited, earlier car and bike alloys used to do that. Pretty much my experience of welding saw alloy:thumbdown:

i'll give it a go see what happens , prety much a spare anyway and at the moment it can't get worse it amazes me it was running at all to be honest i also found that both coil bolts had worked loose and had been for some time it was actually on the flywheel! which was begining to munch its way through it! the lessons of the day 1. lumiweld doesn't damn well work! (at least in my hands anyway ) 2. a bit more thorough maintainance is required!!

I think that there are many others on this site that could take note of No2, even taking the covers off and using a compressor and a can of WD40 would be a step forward:lol:

There's a few cheap chink crank cases on eBay.

I don't suppose any of you have noticed the Mg stamp in a hexagon on the metal parts of these saws? They have quite a high % of magnesium in the alloy, if they were more ally, the saw would way considerably more for it's size
