My dolmar 5105 died today

Can't believe it,i have lots of saws but this little wasp is my favourite,stopped suddenly today,stripped it tonight,heavily scored piston and pinched ring.bought stateside so my warranty is probably worthless.not missed a beat in 8 months,gutted

hello TCD i just checked the dolmar two stroke oil bottles

and the dolmar professional systems oil is fully synthetic and API TC; JASO FD; ISO-L-EGD

The 5000 series Dolmars have a long record of engine scorching due to a somewhat faulty basic design in the US. The "victims" mostly were the US 5100S and the early US 5105 saws - the ones that had the 14,500rpm rev. limiter.

 

The trick is to not submit them to heavy and prolonged cutting, that will overheat the engines. My 2006 5100SH still is fine, likely because I knew about it from the outset.

 

Of course there are the usual possible culprits as well, like a too lean carb setting, an air leak, or bad fuel mix.

Btw, the US sold 5000 series Dolmars used to come with a too lean carb setting as "standard", to pass EPA regulations. Of course that should have been corrected by the dealer that sold it (many didn't), and then the operator should sheck it now and then - but that doesn't always happen.....

Echo Power Blend is F-D aswell.

 

But if anyone's worried and has a US saw (as I do) they think might burn up you might want to consider the only oil that trounces everything else on the market irrespective of specifications namely:

 

Red Line Oils - Redline 2 Stroke Racing Oil | Redline 2 Cycle Racing Oil

Saw troll listed the usual suspects,fuel, air leak or carb setting/fuel delivery.

 

Any saw tech who is any good will check these things on reassembly and correct as necessary. The saw d also be tach tuned 500-1krpm below max revs.

EDIT: But run-in on non polyolester base oil aka JASO-FD synth from a.n.other; beds the rings in properly, RL too slippery to start off with.

Not that early, as far as I know - and if so it didn't work too well.

 

However, the 5105 was supposed to have improved engine cooling over the 5100S - but the trouble continued, at least as long as they were the 14,500 rpm version.
