The solution to "O licensing", overloading and more??

Could it be this:

A vehicle between 3500 and 7500kgs, with a huge hiab (as big as you can fit on, no payload needed) preferably with the option of a man-basket as well?

You'll have spare space aplenty to fit a big chipper at the back of this truck.

This vehicle would be classed as a "tower crane" hence no mot, ved £165pa, no "O license required"

This vehicle can tow a trailer of up to 4000 kgs under those regs without changing ved class etc. As long as that trailer is less than 1020kgs the combination is still "O exempt".

So you'd have 3000kgs payload on the trailer, massive lifting cap and a mewp/crane fed chipper wagon, but without needing an o-license:thumbup:

Any issue with the above or shall I start welding?:001_smile:

Sounds like a winner.

In all seriousness though, if I couldn't afford an O licence I would have stopped doing Treework and found something more profitable. My relatively small investment in a proper lorry has paid for itself over and over.

We've been thinking a lot about this lately.

I think we'll be going the 'O' route but with either a 7.5 or 10 tonner with a hook lift body.

3 or 4 different bodies and a plug in pto hydraulic pump for hiabs/ mews would be ideal I think

As a tower crane it would be entitled to red as long as it only carried kit, carting stuff away would need DERV.

I think I'm allowed to carry "goods associated with the activity the vehicle was intended for" not sure if that would include materials or just tools etc. I'm allowed yo carry them on the trailer though.

For me the fuel/running costs are not the issue. When it works it'll be priced to earn good money. But in my current situation that would only be about half the year so low overheads is what I need.

If in that half year I'd need to pay for a years worth of o-license inspections etc I'd soon be too expensive for a lot of jobs.
