I think the "proud legacy of liberalism and common decency amongst its population" is a thing of the past.

Wrong, it will only become a thing of the past if everyone allows it to happen, this is why such measures as the proposed 40 days detainment of suspected terrorists and the implementation of ID cards cannot be allowed to go ahead.

We are allowing this government to walk all over our hard fought for liberal values. If its anyones fault its our own for not doing enough to stop them.

It has become now that you cannot legally protect yourself, your family, and your possessions from the criminal fraternity. They are prepared to carry weapons to carry out their crime

This was what I was saying to Ed, criminals have always had the upperhand, they always will because they disregard the current morals of the society they live in, in short they will do what you dont. Thats the way its always been, having guns is not going to change that.

The police should probably be armed now. Not the public.

Another point is that this country has become so multi-cultural since the last war, that the old British morals have been lost.

This is because the indigenous population of Britain have become lazy, selfish and greedy.

I'm happy to have more Poles, Afghans and Nigerians etc. Just so long as they live by our laws.

Your quite right - Criminals usually do have the upper hand. But I believe it should be my right to protect me and mine from the lawless scum that litter this sceptic Isle.

I live in a very rural area, I leave my trucks parked in my yard with the keys in them etc., But there is no way I would walk across town in any of our local small towns at closing time. The criminal classes in this country have become far to used to pathetic policing, and getting away with a slap on the wrist for their violent behaviour.

Ok arm the police, there is a unit of ARVs in each force now. These are specialist officers who have rigorous training, and undergo continuous evaluation. Personally I dont want some "hobby bobby" being tooled up. I'm ure the majority of immigrants are law abiding citizens too, but they do each bring their own set of morals and beliefs with them. This is a problem that our police Chiefs have already highlighted. One big issue being the carrying of knives. this is without the inherent problem of the language barriers, which cost many thousands in interpreter fees.

Where is the "common decency" you speak of? Old ladies mugged for their pension, kids spitting abuse at all around them, the list is endless. No we didnt throw this away, it was taken when a good belt round the ear became frowned upon. I for one would never have dared back-chat a parent, teacher or police officer.

A registration system gun law - the Firearms Act - was first introduced to Great Britain in 1920, spurred on partly due to fears of a surge in crime that might have resulted from the large number of guns available following World War I and in part due to fears of working class unrest in this period

Cant have the plebs arming themselves, can we!?

No, because at that time the Bolsheviks had just seized power in Russia, and the British government would not allow that to happen here, Thank God. British people dont really get off on all that extremist ideology, which is a good thing. The Labour Party was started so the people could have representation in government, not start a bloody violent revolution.

This overturned the right to keep and bear arms that had originated in England during the reign of Henry II with the 1181 Assize of Arms, and developed as part of Common Law.

Times change Ed. People unfortunatly remain the same, technology and science allowed us to create evermore creative ways of killing ourselves in biggers numbers. Also, moral standards are transient, always changing to suit the current society.

It comes back to the fact that the UK is a nanny fascist state, where the government decides whats best for you.

So, what you gonna do about it? I bet you dont even vote.

Thats because the Swiss dont have an army. They need to give guns to all the citizens, and like most things Swiss, its just for show.

Anyway, I refuse to give Switzerland any respect until their government apologises for their neutral stance during the war.

Your father sounds like a sensible man. I'm glad Britain has some of the tightest gun controls in the world.

Fair enough, banning handguns in 1988 didn't help any did it?

Banning the sale of military style semi automatics after the Hungerford massacre hasn't stopped Yardies getting AK47's,so by your own admission if criminals won't abide by the rules. And if only the politically controlled forces,Army,Police (actually private citizens like you and me) are the only holders of firearms, then you and me will live in a dictatorship.

No one should be barred from excercising self defence with the same threat that is brandished.

No, this is called a democracy, where the protection of the civilian population is provided by the police and army. The army and police are government controlled forces yes, but the people vote for the government. If you dont like the government? vote them out or leave the country.

So if someone wants to destroy your home with a tank, you can buy a tank to defend yourself?

Lies, damn lies and statistics. Thats a stupid argument and you know it.

Here's some more statistics -

There were 21,521 reported crimes involving firearms in England and Wales in 2005/6, according to the Home Office.

That's a 55 per cent increase on a decade earlier, when there were 13,876 gun-related offences.

It averages 414 gun crimes every week.

50 of the total firearm crimes were murders.

7,248 were for other violent incidents against another person.

Gun-related incidents hit their peak in 2003/04 when there were 24,094 recorded offences.

Criminals dont follow rules, thats what makes them criminals.

So you really think the police are there for your protection? If thats the case, they should be sacked.

I personally feel they are there to watch and control the population.

So if someone wants to destroy your home with a tank, you can buy a tank to defend yourself?

seriously...? IF (and its a big if) someone wanted to do that, I would want an accuracy industries .50 cal with armour piercing rounds. Having said that, you only need a driving licence to own a tank. Your more likely to need protection from a broken bottle, fists, boots and baseball bats.

In my humble opinion, it's better to have a gun and not need it, rather than to need a gun and not have it. Just my 2 cents, or pence... You are awakened one night to hear voices in your house and realise that a person or persons has gained entry to your house. What do you reach for? Pump action or phone? I KNOW what I would rather have in my hand in that situation.
