T540xp tuning and mods

The 540 is a good saw from what I've seen of it, it feels a bit poorly built but time will tell. I think the main issue is these new saws aren't really a step up from the 200t more of a step sideways

They are a major step down, IMO, the 540 has the power, but its made from plasticine, mine is 6 months old, the fuel tank is leaking, the side cover fits poorly, the chain tensioner is poor, the rear av spring is shot and the top handle is folding where the switches and trigger are. Mine also runs poorly, cutting out when hung on the harness and often cutting out for no reason.

OK the the 201 lacks power, but IMO is better built than the 540 (I had a 201 for 6 months or so before it was stolen) I have just bought another 201, I can accommodate the lack of power, adjusting my cutting methods accordingly.

I just need a saw thats predictable and will at least hold together.

I'd have to agree with CJM I think if the 540 had the same solid feel of the 200 it would be a winner by miles, build quality is the only thing that worries me, saying that I have a bet on that it won't break in 3 months, going well so far

For a 201 you need to drill out the exhaust and drill out the resistor in H carb screw so you can turn it up a notch, fit a unguarded stihl chain it'll cut like gooden. All my top handles have been used heavily so this 540 will be put to the test

I wanted a change probably for the same reason you bought 540 after coming from a 201. In 2 years time hopefully a better saw is produced or I find a cheap 200

Well i like the 201t and think its fine. Using 200t at the moment. Id rather have a carb that i can adjust myself, no auto tune etc. Thats just me. I've done loads of work from big trees to hedges etc... given my 201t death since i bought it.

Never broken anything on it, only complaint is fuel tank breather weeping fuel but got one to replace it.

T540 isnt for me thanks :)

Dave... more saws nicked or from last time :confused1:

Last time, before Xmas, I used the insurance money to buy the 540, I was pleased with it at first, but hate it now

Ive been waiting for the little niggles of the saw to come out on here. Takes to long on here tbh... too much praise not enough honest opinions

Might refurb a 200t!

That's just too expensive for a 2nd hand saw which will be around 4-6 years old it won't have warrenty (obviously) and I don't know it's history, I'd consider paying that money for a mint one off one of my mates but they just don't want to sell them

Does it really matter about warrenty?

If you found a 'decent' saw for 300-350 it would only take a couple of days or so to pay for itself.

Ive had some older saws that i should have never sold! 2005 200 and it did loads of work and would still be running now i wager if i still had it.

Just buy one and get on with work
