I think the picture might need to be abit closer to give any accurate diagnosis.....with my eyes it looks like abit of oil!!

 

 

Does look a bit like oil tbh, Tiny pinhead size holes in the bark, not sure how close up the phone camera will go, prob should have thought of that.

 

Didn't know if the flat section indicated anything

Looks like exudates from within the tree. Did it have any odour, was it fluid or crusty?

Possible indicator of Armillaria infection, hows the condition/vitality of the crown (particularly in line with the 'oily stuff/flat spot')?

Wish I paid more attention now, pretty sure it was fluid and the tree's not in leaf yet but nothing was untoward when it was surveyed a year or so ago
