Be careful about buying a secondhand deck as most of the 6mm bolts which hold the inner throwplate to the outer deck will be seized and shear off. That mower is best part of 20 years old.

The old ones are well built, the new ones are utter Shin in my opinion.

Agree, that model, and the next ones were ok.

The post 2004 varispeed models are complete rubbish.

This was my first thought ^^. As you say makes no difference and is the lazy option which i like :)

Noticed the blades need a sharpen, any science to these or just give a tickle on the bench grinder?

for doing the blades give them a light sharpen both sides you can get a balance tool thats shows if there balanced. if not use a pencil give it a swing like a propler and see if it comes back to same spot if its off a bit then sharpen oneside a bit more untill its balenced. as for front, old washing machine side and pop rivit on. will stop any stone flying out of front.

As said, do make sure you plate the front up, it will help with collecting the cuttings, & more importantly prevent stones from causing damage or injury to bystanders.

Sharpen the blade as said, & balance it, easy enough to do, good mowers these.

I have a old hayter you can have, not quite the same but you may be able to do something with it. It used to run when I last used it but seemed to like leaded petrol better
