Gas for your MIG welder

Hi all,

The disposable bottles work out expensive if you weld a fair bit, so I tracked down some 'rent free' gas...

I obtained the Hobby Weld 5 mix of 93% Argon 5% CO2 2% O2 mix for thin sheet steel welding. You pay a deposit for the cylinder but no rental - £72 then £36 for the gas.

The cylinder holds 9 litres and is equivalent to 23 of the small ones so the maths makes sense.

I also bought a decent regulator, extra hose & adaptor to the 4mm pipe - overall its a good upgrade from the somewhat hit and miss of the screw down regulator which I used to set up listening to gas flow anyway.

I got mine from Wellington Welders (Gosport) who were helpful sorting out the adaptors etc.

Hobbyweld 5 Gas Fill Charge

Hope this helps anyone considering changing from disposable bottles but cant justify cylinder rental.

hi my dad tends to do most of my welding and he went down to see local fabrication workshop and they let him have the big argoshield ones for £40 each and no rent cash... Didn't think that was two bad. Your right though they do use a fair bit.

Hi,

Think you are very fortunate there.

I have one on Rent from Air Products, £114 a year, I have had it 6 years and I'm still on the same fill as I don't do a lot of welding but it's there when I do need it. Hope it doesn't go off.

I don't do a lot of welding though mate, usually is something broke. I had it for when I restored a VW camper van. Maybe I'm not turning it on;)
