i know this is an old thread but i just thought i'd let eberyone know that i did eventually i.d this timber.

 

it's from a species called false holly or holly olive, osmanthus spp.

 

this would have been planted by some dignitary in the grounds of windsor great park in about 1935...

i got lucky when looking through a web page and saw pictures of the endgrain which were a dead give away.

someone did suggest that the bark was similar to a holly so when i was looking through the wood identification website i clicked on to holly to see if there were any that looked like it, nearly halfway down the page i saw the very distinctive grain of the osmanthus he's taken photos of...
