Mobile plant mechanic/fitter.

Can anyone recommend a mobile mechanic in the South Cambridgeshire region? I have a jcb sat on a drive unable to start. I'm guessing it could be the starter, as it has power to it, but doesn't kick in.

Ok first thing I would try is a clout from a hammer while someone turns the key. The starter maybe stuck. When was it last used before it wouldn't start?

 

If there is a click then. Yeh solenoid is fine, if no click then solenoid. Can get around this with a big electrical screwdriver and jump the in and out on yeh solenoid terminals.

 

If this doesn't turn the engine then it's the brushes in the starter. Not hard to do with a socket set to be honest.

 

Best I can do as I don't know any plant fitters up your way.

have you tried shorting it across the terminals on the starter

Check the battery terminals are tight first, don't short the starter unless you know what you're doing, and FFS, if you do, use a screwdriver that 1. Has a good insulated handle and 2. You don't want to use as a screwdriver anymore. As if you do it wrong with a spanner, it will burn your hand like that German bloke in raiders of the lost ark.

Whipped the starter of myself, turns out its fooked! Apparently a 6month old reconditioned one. Wasn't a very good recondition!
