Needy for info sorry - need advice on 1) skidding and 2) balistic waders?!

Recommended Posts

Would have to agree on the low life expectancy of rope, even on soft ground it soon gives up the ghost.

Easy to make up your own skidding chain, just bolt 2 loops into a length of chain (one at either end) then choke it up and attach other eye to the chipper. This will work if you keep your loads light, might be a pain to undo if you go for bigger loads as the chains can bite in. If not the usual suspects can supply a hook that you can pin onto a length of chain. Pity your so far away I've got some spares on the shelf you could borrow.

To get the front of the log off the ground (as per the logging arch) I've seen the front of an old plastic canadian canoe used- helps reduce ground damage and easier to drag. Used behind a quad and seems to up the amount that can be pulled each time by about 50%.

Hope it helps.

First, I have to remove a load of timber growing from the edge of a stream and the only access I can anticipate is via the stream itself thus I think I need chainsaw protective waders - do they exist?

I've got a set but the are only chainsaw protective boots with wader rubber welded on the top - therefore, no protection from welly height up. OK to wear saw trousers underneath though. What size boot are you? I used them for one job 5 years ago and have been in the shed ever since - yours if you want them for £30 +p&p - think they're size 11 or 12. Or you can buy them new from here for £85...

I just wear saw trousers under waders i believe sevsafe.co.uk did do a pair though but they were not chest waders???

For skidding i use old lowering rope as i dont have the power of a pto winch but ideally skid choke chains are what you want but i cant imagine them really being needed with what a chipper could pull.

We do indeed - Chainsaw Boots Protective Safety Forestry Arboriculture

also have chest waders with steel toe cap and midsole which might be ok in conjunction with normal protective trousers as others have suggested
