had my first go at quarter sawing yesterday on a 36' oak log, width was ~ 48" at the butt tapering to 30".

I used the new extension bars and winch on the 48" Alaskan Mill.

attached are pics of some of the process, pics of results to follow.

Nice bit of wood.

Forgive my ignorance, but why haven't you kept the quarters the full length of the trunk? They seem to have been cut in half, which presumably will give you shorter planks when you mill it? Is that because of limitations in the length the Alaskan mill will cope with (or the length of the ladder you attached it to, anyway!), or is there more demand for shorter planks?

Thanks.

Sandspider - the planks are twelve foot long, out of a 36' log. Seemed like a good way to divide it, it fit on the trailer, and the tractor could pick them up. Twelve foot is long enough for most applications.
