Beech fungi Id

I spotted these fungi on some beech that came down in the recent strong winds and I'm curious what they are and what it means for affected trees? Can a tree survive the infection? Very new to fungi so any info is helpful. I think one of these is honey fungus but not sure about the other? Looked it up and it looks like Bulgaria inquinans but I'm not sure.u8u5a4ym.jpgu6eryge9.jpg

I can't make out enough detail on the first image but agree with Swinny that the second image shows the fruit bodies of a Kretzschmaria duesta, which will eventually lead to trunk/root buttress failure as it parasitises the wood volumes destroying the cellulose and lignin via soft rot.

I think they are desiccated Pluerotus sp (possibly P. ostreatus)

If its tree specific fungi that you are interested in then you could try the Arbtalk Fungi Id app for smart phones and/or the AA Fungi on Trees (an aborists field guide)

For general fungi books have a look at Roger Phillips and/or the Collins complete guide to British Mushrooms & toadstools

  • 5 years later...

Customer sent me some pics of a large mature beech. It shed a large limb(about 30" diameter) in the show about 5 yrs ago. The fungi are in the trunk about 5m up where the limb shed any ideas on ident and how they will affect the tree. @David Humphries. Sorry they are not that clear but its all i've got at present.
