Whats the best wood for carving with chainsaws...? I've just made my first mushroom (pictures to follow) with a bit of larch i had lying around but it doesn't seem the best... any opinions?

I’ve always made mine from Oak, Cherry and Pear. I did a few from Ash but these split after time. Try and find a nice wind-blown Oak that’s seasoned naturally in some woodland, you wont go far wrong with that!

Ps...Get that pic up on here! :001_smile:

Don't laugh as its not quite finished yet (yes the stalk is square for the mo) and as i've said don't think the larch is the best but here it is lol

I sell most of my wood to 'carver si' instead of turning it into firewood! He reckons that for mushrooms then pretty much any softwood is best, and LOVES larch. Sequioa makes excellent bears- the colour is good. Ash he wont touch. For the sculptures of animals Macrocarpa, sycamore if it hasnt split, Yew, oak, walnut, beech..........:001_smile:

So far ive used Larch, Sycamore, Oak, and Yew.

More Larch than the others (quite like it for rough pieces), Oak, Yew, and Sycamore for more detailed pieces.

Looking forward to trying some other woods tho.

Post a pic when u finish.
