Does anyone tow a trailer with a telehandler ?

Just wondered if anyone tows an ag trailer with handler. I am thinking I no longer have any tractors and dont miss them but must have a decent tele so why not collect a bit of my wood with it up to say 10 miles.

Is it a bit hard on the transmission. I was looking for a compact 2.5 tonne machine but the bigger stuff looks better for the money. What put me off using ours on the road was the insurance 7 years ago was £1000 for road use and £1400 when lifting.

Mechanical drives are better than hydrostatic for towing- you'll knacker a hydro easily with heavy towing. Even mechanical drives are still not an ideal machine, you won't want to put much behind it.

yes mikey-does it all the time with large silage trailers and flat beds pm him and he will give u far more info than i can he uses the jcb telehandler

Used to do it a lot. But.

 

The tele will be very slow if hydrostatic. And will struggle and not like it at all.

 

If the load is heavy the hitch will struggle if lift it up at all.

 

They really are not designed to tow anything one the road. Ok for shunting trailers around.

Led hundreds of tonnes of straw over the years with jcb forklift regulary had 10 tonne behind never had a issue. Used to go miles with them.

Was a 526 good machine. Drove that and a simalar manitou not a lot to choose between them but the jcb just edged it for me.

hi over the years used john deer manitou jcb and even an old sambron jcb edged it for spares and service for me on telehandlers

there is no rush just weighing up the options I have a 525 1986 with big front wheels. Seems cruel to put a trailer on but later machines may be more capable. I drove a 4 wheel steer jcb 526 the other day and was impressed especially for a sub £10,000 machine. purposefull not to big and not too many electronics to go wrong.
