How to do this?

Assuming the site allows, if you've got access to a cant hook, or some other way of rolling sections, I would section it up into the longest bit you can roll fairly easily which will probably be around 2m. You can then disc up a length with a whole series of top cuts, roll it and cut again from the other side, which stops you having to cut near the ground.

I will second the advice previously give regarding use of wedges and also the above. Also cut as many sections as you can roll or break off before you risk blunting your chain in the ground.

It sounds like a chunky stem which we would roll either with a digger or shove with the butt plate on the winch - neither of which you are likely to have.

You mentioned that there are fencers on site - they will have a set or two of monkey strainers and you should be able to roll a decent chunk over if you can get a suitable anchor point

Cheers

A useful tip I picked up for processing large timber is when you start a top cut, go it about half way, pull out, cut a little wedge from your top cut, and knock it in with the bar. DIY wedge to prevent a cut closing.

I'm sure someone can explain better than me.

This one deserves to go into the Arbtalk 'Top Tips' archive!

Nah mate, at college you get nice 15" softwood :)

Wedges are a good idea. I also have a small husqvarna felling bar. I use it to tap wedges in, break off chunks if I can cut all the way through, and also roll the stem. Very useful.

Missed this thread last year.:blushing:

As above - Husky impact bar and 10" plastic wedge works for me.:thumbup1:
