Briquetts killing log sales

Sold a Charnwood stove the other day, that has 2 free briquettes inside it made by Verdo, they looked a good product, heavy, solid, no waste in the stove.

I use hotmax at home. verdo and hotmax both within a couple of miles of my home. The verdos I found twice the price and last longer but I could sit on the stove absolutely no heat.

Have to say that Northern Ireland is crying out for some decent alternatives to firewood.

 

Sales of stoves have really taken off as people are looking an alternative to oil heating but there is a awful amount of shite being flogged to folk, and at ridiculous prices, to put in them.

 

Due to burning more wood and less coal this year I'm going to be a few weeks short of our own properly seasoned stuff so I've been looking for something to eak it out a bit and would actually prefer a decent briquette to the over-priced crap available as so called "firewood".

 

But whilst there is at least plenty over there to choose from, next to nothing here.

 

So don't knock it!

You buy petrol/diesel/paraffin by litre

You buy electricity by kw/hour

 

You buy logs by ?

 

Needs nationally agreed standard ......

i'd say you need agreed mousture content and volume

 

I think trick is to worth WITH a trading standards office and get this bottomed 100%

THEN roll it out across the country

So you can buy logs with confidence and if there is a problem there is standard to work to .....and where your logs can be checked

This leaves the tried and tested 'trust the retailer' - and most people do. Supply crap or poor value for money and you'll be lucky to see that customer (or their friends and neighbours) again. Supply good product and good value and you'll preserve your customer base.

 

There's something about clean, well cut and split logs that briquettes just can't match. Ok it's a good use of waste product but I think both can exist side by side. I don't see Adolf Briquette taking over the world just yet

Home Bargains sell Verdo Bricks in packs of 6 for £2.49. Although they wont replace logs for me, they are a handy alternative and I buy a tenners worth a month as a back up. They can be hard to start and dont look as nice as real wood but give out a decent heat in my 5kw stove (one brick split into 3/4 lasts about 2 hours or so).

They do make a lot of mess (IMO) but are easy to store.

 

I can understand why people are turning to these for a lot of the reasons already mentioned above.

If people bought there logs a year in advance they would not have a problem. There is a place for squashed sawdust but I cant see it replacing proper logs.
