Poplar confusion

I'm struggling with the species on this.

 

I thought originally aspen but can't settle on it. Second thought could be grey pop.

Id say an aspen, very similar to pop[ tho :?

Buds look to large to be Aspen, and the leaf shape is wrong too, from the limited view of form, Lombardy??

Hybrid black of some sort would be my guess. I find pinning down a species on a lot of pops can be a right pita...

I know what you mean. It looks like an aspen or while pop going off bark. Not quite got the right form for a white pop as it's pretty straight with a couple of kinks. Not light enough bark for aspen which makes me think grey as that's a hybrid of the two.

 

These trees have been planted. So must be something!

 

I thought hybrid black (p. x canadensis) grew with a significant lean like the wild black? (P. Nigra var betufolia)

Seems I have cracked it.

 

P. trichocarpa or P. balsamifera.

 

Western balsam poplar or balsam poplar. Leaf says the latter although they are fairly similar species.

 

Gotta change my records now so they are all right!

I would of guessed at balsam poplar too, although I do like the term black hybrid as it covers a lot:thumpup:.
